Forget new... for £200 you can get a VERY respectable WESTONE Thunder 1A.
These bad boys were made in Japan in the early to mid 80s and have an 18 volt active circuit that you wont find these days (cheap anyway). The woods used and the construction quality are what you would expect from top end equipment today. Brass bridge and nut add to the sustain and they are exceptionally light...(for a bass).
So.. if you have £200 the get yourself on evilbay and grab one... you'll even get change from that... and in 5 years time you can sell it on and more than likely make a profit... I have 7 of them so I'm biased...and no...I'm not on commission..
I also have a couple that I'm willing to sell _________________ RPM Studios

are they honestly worth that much? don't get me wrong I love my one, it's a solid giggable no frills beast.
But it cost me 75 quid, i spent 200 nicker on a second hand six string (not really a beginner instrument).
second hand basses are usually very good quality though, 200 sheets should see you pick up a gem. _________________ "Please, allow me to introduce myself. I am a man of wealth, and taste."

Sod that - 200 squids will get you a rather nice and VERY playable Yamaha RBX - look at both the 170 and 270 models (pick ups and electronics are different, but for phatty natty bass you want the RBX260, if you can find one anywhere...)
Alternatively, I can definitely recommend Aria budget stuff, or even their Pro II stuff second hand, but watch out for dodgy original jack inputs, as they are prone to corrosion. _________________ The Pope of Funk on MySpace
