Misterlee, The Retro Spankees & The Motorettes - University of Lincoln Delph Bar - 10/11/05 by Tom Cassidy

The University of Lincoln's weekly Fuse club recently played host to the eclectic mix of Misterlee, The Retro Spankees & The Motorettes.

Leicester's Misterlee started the evening's proceedings with their trademark sonic assaults of feedback and distortion mixed with gentle melodies, jazz guitar and violin.

The venue proved less intimate than the previous times I'd seen them but they were no less enthralling. The usual cautious semi-circle crowd formation support bands receive replaced the regular cross-legged sit-down crowds the band are used to but they were not perturbed and were as enthusiastic as ever, delivering a storming set.

The band's enthusiasm is the key to their success as performers - it is clear from the start they are comfortable and confident in their sound. 'Christmas Present' is a perfect example of how experimental music can work so well - it achieves everything the recent experimental Radiohead fall short on and it is precise, crafted and confident.

Another key to their success is whilst the songs are certainly experimental, they are grounded by an instant accessibility and strong melodies. Their humour shines through-out with their banter between songs and their rye lyrics ("Revolution's just another bar in this town" - from ska-tinged stomper 'Dim Lit').

It is clear front-man Lee Allatson knows what he wants from a performance. A skilled multi-instrumentalist, he keeps his assortment of devices at arm's reach and will try to use as many as possible, usually whilst drumming and beat-boxing into his distorted microphone.

As their final jazz/classical/blues set ender reaches it's sinister climax, everyone's certain Misterlee are the most exciting experiment you're likely to hear.

Not quite Lincolnshire, but the nearest local forum and date to the parish:

Misterlee play Solstice, Northminster Rd., Peterboro.
Thursday 25th May
Doors 8pm, Adm FREE!
Venue tel: 01733 560231

Misterlee ... "provokes emotion in a way that most music can't these days... a true maverick with a vision that is worth sharing... the sound of post-modern musicianship... a connoisseur of innovation...

...it seems just unfair that someone is allowed to have big signs on their aura saying "Weird Guy, Please Feed".

...a kinda jazz-lofi, primal dub thing.... music alchemists... Terrific... the pace is quick and the touchstones untouchable..."

For the Love of Lincolnshire!!

It's a Flatlands Revolution!!

Misterlee returns to Peterboro on Saturday 11th August to play for our chum Josh's album launch at The Glass Onion, 2 Burghley Road, Peterborough, Cambs, PE1 2QB. Details would appear to be most secret, though I can tell you that I shall be paying an extremely rare solo set shortly after 6pm... Shhhhh!!

...and then...

It's off to 'Moultonbury' on Sunday 12th of August... another exclusive gathering of them-in-the-know for a mini-fest in the old school mould held in Terri's Field, Moulton Chapel, Lincolnshire. Once again details are super hush-hush, but I do know that Misterlee (on his lonesome) shall play the acoustic stage sometime after 7.30pm...

Come sing along!!
