dancing about architecture sounds like an a-level theatre studies composition. seriously.

our piece incidently was dancing/acting/singing/miming and other randomness about art/war/politics/fear/sex/end of the world, and for some reason featured a massive dalek-like structure in the background. i can't remember why

I think dance is gay; however I also believe it's possible to dance about architecture, if it wasn't then dancers would be seriously restricted on where they could dance!

Edit..

Well OK - that quote exists too. But FZ did -apparently- say the one about "talking" and "fishing". A corruption of the original expression, maybe? More than likely.

Ah, that makes sense... I know it's been widely accredited.

I think the point of the expression rightly or wrongly is that the full extent of what music is can only be experienced by listening to or playing it...

Trying to capture what music does to you in words is, even with a writer at the height of their powers, only a shadow.

Certainly, if you interpret a piece of music as a series of emotional responses that you can write about, then you really are fishing about architecture... it's kinda pointless but can be useful at times. It's been so long since I had an emotional response to music (other than the usual bafflement) I couldn't possibly comment. In my opinion though, Zappa was using it in a context whereby it implied "stop analysing it and LISTEN!"

Is that the one where you did an unplanned solo slot at the end?

That was a good night.
